Brief &
Ideas

You will need to choose ONE of the following two briefs set by UAL - brief options HERE

Under your Brief interpretation & Ideas page, start to breakdown your brief. Think about the theme and use the words as starting points. Remember your unit 1 will be a documentary. The theme and words are just starting blocks, they could be parts of your project.

Once you have chosen and read through the brief you want to interpret and brainstorm ideas. Add an image of your chosen brief on your interpreting brief page and start to complete the following tasks.

Start to interpret and understand the brief answering the questions below on your blog;

- Types of products you could create.
- What you think you need to do in terms of length, aims and what succession looks like.

- What's the purpose and who your audience could be.

- Initial thoughts and reflections of the project.

- Links you could potentially make to words & practitioners within the brief.

- Who you might work with and why

After, start to brainstorm ideas for a new documentary. You need to complete the following tasks;

Mind Map

Create a visual mind map with multiple avenues and areas you could base your documentary on. Think about a range (5-10) of ideas and thoughts you could use. Think of themes, locations, characters, style, audience and more.

Inspiration
Watch 2-3 documentaries you find interesting using shortoftheweek or Shortfil. Analyse them to consider what you could use from each one. Think about style of filming, narrative, content, editing etc.

Idea discussion
Write up 2-3 ideas with a short synopsis (Story) and explain each one to another student. Discuss with another person to get feedback on each idea. After, write up the advantages and disadvantages of each idea linked to;

  1. Equipment needs

  2. Set/location & timing needs

  3. Contributor needs (eg I need someone who loves climbing)

  4. Budget/other

  5. Audiences (how/why suitable)

Other idea documents you could produce

  • Moodboard

  • Vision Board

  • Sketches

  • Photography examples

  • Recorded discussion between a group.
